Today was a day of waves of experience and emotion.  The early morning Mass found me with about 60 others trying to mark the holy day at the beginning of their experience.  I was starkly reminded how out of sync we all seem to be with one another as we attempt still to transition to the old/new wording within the liturgy.  With the fewer persons attending, the mumbling and lack of continuity was obvious and some responses even morphed into a blended wording of both former and revised liturgical dialogue.  It is amusing at best and annoying least, one thing is certain, no one sailed through the Mass in effortless repetition of responses that become, if not careful, mindless and automatic.

As we departed the Mass the school children were arriving for the school celebration.  Many were decked out as their favorite saint.  I was amazed at the diversity represented. (I recall many such celebrations where 7 St. Francis representations were balanced by 7 Virgin Marys. ) This procession of admired saints though included but was not limited to Maximilian Kolbe, Mother Teresa, Teresa of Avila, Theresa of Lisieux, Mother Cabrini, St. Lucy, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha  and St. Brigid as well as a St. Patrick, St. Michael and one Blessed Mother with holy infant in tow.  This children’s procession represented to me the best interpretation of my lectio today.  The persons who lives were represented, recounted, and celebrated were the ones who have survived the time of great distress. These were the ones who came to understand that we are all God’s children and that we are all blessed in our own life circumstances if we but open our eyes and see.   The LORD’s are the earth and its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it.  The lives and stories of those gone before us and we pray our lives and stories should extol this truth.  May this be so, that the kingdom of God may be recognized on earth as it is in heaven.
